I've begun volunteering with the rescue group that runs the adoption room at my local Petsmart. I talked to a potential adopter for one of the cats yesterday, and they came back today and took the cat home. This is the first adoption since I started volunteering.

I saw Avengers tonight. I liked it a lot, and there are a lot of very funny bits in the movie. But I may have been the only person in the theater to LOL upon noticing that in every scene, Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) is barefoot. I assume that was someone's way of acknowledging that yes, having her totter around in four-and-a-half-inch heels in the Iron Man movies was just ludicrous.

RIP Levon Helm

Levon Helm, drummer and singer of The Band, died today at the age of 71 of throat cancer. He possessed one of the most recognizable and memorable voices in rock 'n' roll. He felt every word he sang, and he made the listener feel them, too.

Easter PSA: Lilies are toxic to cats
Determined Sam
baileytc
Happy Easter or Passover, if you celebrate either!

A quick word of caution to cat owners regarding Easter lilies: Most varieties of lilies, including day lilies, are highly toxic to cats. Ingesting even a tiny amount of any part of a lily (or even drinking the water the lilies are in) can cause kidney failure. Signs of kidney damage can show up anywhere from an hour or two to a week after ingestion.

My neighbor's cat nibbled on an Easter lily a few years ago, started to show signs of illness within a few hours, and survived only because my neighbor got her to the vet very quickly. The lily did lasting damage to her kidneys, and she still receives subcutaneous fluids twice a week to help keep her comfortable as the disease progresses.

So...don't bring lilies into your house if you have a cat, and don't give lilies to cat owners.

Komen and Planned Parenthood
Determined Sam

You may have read that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization has cut funding to Planned Parenthood for breast-cancer exams and other services for poor women who can't otherwise afford them. The Komen foundation recently adopted a policy that prohibits it from funding groups under investigation by the government, which it says forces it to stop all grants to PP. Activists and commentators have speculated that Komen's new VP of Policy, Karen Handel, advocated for the new policy precisely because it would "force" Komen to cease funding PP. Handel ran for governor of Georgia a couple of years ago on an anti-abortion platform and strongly advocated that the state eliminate its funding for PP.

The resulting outcry has led to increased scrutiny of Komen's policies and stance of various pieces of women's health legislation--and some of what's coming out may surprise those who have supported Komen by donating and participating in the Race for the Cure. For example, Komen lobbied against the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention & Treatment Act, which provided Medicaid coverage for some uninsured women

Due to Komen's decision to cut its funding for PP, I can no longer support the organization. Money that I would have donated to Komen Race for the Cure participants (sorry, weesta) will go to PP instead. It appears I'm not the only one who's made and acted on this decision: Planned Parenthood received more than $400K in donations in the 24 hours after the Komen news broke.

BoyCat update: Good vet report!

After our troubled visit to the cardiologist earlier this month, I was dreading BoyCat's follow-up visit this past week.
So we came up with a plan to minimize the stress on him, and it seems to have worked.Collapse )
